Lilly Scholarships in Religion for Journalists

Journalists interested in taking college courses in religion or spirituality may apply for a scholarship program offered by the Religion Newswriters Association.

Journalists will receive scholarships for up to $5,000 each to study religion at any accredited college, university or seminary. Scholarships cover expenses including tuition, registration fees and books.

SU Abroad: Muslim Cultures: Historical Diversity and Contemporary Realities

Each year, Syracuse University in New York offers a summer program dedicated to Muslim Cultures in London. "The program combines course work with guest lectures; visits to museums, mosques, and special exhibits; field projects; and study tours to Granada and Istanbul, historic sites of exquisite Islamic architecture."

According to the website:

"Financial assistance totaling approximately $6,000 per student is available for all those admitted to the program. This includes a tuition grant that covers 3 of the 9 credits, and a program fee grant of $1,400 that covers billed expenses for the field study trips to Granada and Istanbul. This award is in addition to individual grants of $2,000 that are available to all students regardless of financial need."

About 50 percent of students who study at SU Abroad centers are Syracuse students. The rest come from over 150 schools and colleges across the U.S.

Dr.Mohammad Riyaz Ahmed Scholarship Fund

The Dr.Mohammad Riyaz Ahmed Scholarship Fund "helps students, representing various area high schools and colleges or universities, receive scholarships and allow them to use these scholarships at the colleges and universities of their choice. "

Applicants must belong to Muslim community centers in certain cities in Oregon (Portland and some other cities) or specific areas of Washington State (specified on the application).

Preference is given to students studying the following fields: Law, Journalism, Psychology, Counseling, or social work.

Deadline: In 2006, the deadline to apply for this scholarship was in May. Visit the website to obtain more accurate information for 2008-2009.

Islamic Scholarship Fund

Islamic Scholarship Fund (ISF) is a 501 C (3) non-profit organization founded in 2006 to encourage Muslim students in the United States to pursue college and post graduate degrees in humanities, social sciences and liberal arts.

ISF’s goal is to encourage Muslim students to pursue a college or post-graduate degrees in humanities, social sciences, liberal arts and law through awarding annual scholarships of $1000-$10,000 to deserving students.

Among other things, "Students must be studying at a “top 20” university of their respective major according to one of major rating systems."

Deadline: May 15th of each calendar year

Islamic Center of Minnesota Scholarship

The Islamic Center of Minnesota (ICM) Scholarship Fund was endowed in 1992 with the vision to be available annually to the college students based upon their academic achievement, financial need and service to the community.

Applicants must be residents of Minnesota. High school seniors and university students of any level are invited to apply for the $10,000 in funding that is available.

Deadline: The website says July 31, 2007, so make sure to contact the Islamic Center for information about 2008.

Qatar Scholarship Program

The Qatar Scholarship Program offers dedicated Arabic language students from the United States the opportunity to master their skills in an intensive Arabic language program at the Qatar University in Doha.

This program is open to graduate students or those recently obtaining a Bachelors or Masters degree.

Deadline: February 4th (looks like this might be yearly, so this is a good time to start preparing for 2009).
